Our Family's Favorite Thanksgiving Resources!

First off today, enjoy this one minute audio clip (screen is black) as you think about those first small group of Christians known as pilgrims who journeyed across the vast ocean to start a Christian nation! You will LOVE this clip; I think it only works thought on the web view, not the mobile view. I get so inspired listening to the roots of our Christian heritage!

This sample is excerpted from "Thanksgiving, A Time to Remember," by Barbara Rainey. I highly encourage you to listen to all of itperhaps in your holiday travels in the car!

Today I'm giving you all of our family's favorite Thanksgiving books! Curl up with your child and read such great picture books like, Three Young Pilgrims by Cheryl Harness. It tells the story on one year between 1620 and 1621 of the Allerton family. Her illustrations are marvelous—as you can see below!

C.S. Lewis said any book worth reading at 5 should be worth reading at 95! These are those kind of books! (The Bradford book below is for older children or adults from the journals of William Bradford.)

All of these books are excellent, and you will feel as though you are there! They are faith-building when you realized all the obstacles the pilgrims faced and yet—they were thankful people of faith. They had to be to even take the step of faith to face the perils of the sea to begin a new Christian nation.

I have read them all many times over with our children and never tire of them (the only one I have not read above is the Stories Behind the Hymns that Inspire America by Ace Collins, but I have read others of his books in his the story behind the hymn series and he is excellent.

What if that group of Christian men and women—who journeyed across the ocean in September of 1620 after saying goodbye to their friends and family—could come back today in 2012 to witness the great nation that they began with just a few people and a strong faith in God?

Would our lives honor God and all the sacrifices and hardships they endured?

Let's seek to bring glory to God together this Thanksgiving by living lives worthy of our calling in Christ Jesus!
Happy Thanksgiving! Walk by Faith,

  1. I totally forgot not one but two favorite resources. How could I forget "The Light and the Glory," by Peter Marshall and David Manuel (available in elementary version and adult version, both EXCELLENT, and one of my absolute favorites!!!) Also, the fabulous radio drama called Squanto by Focus on the Family Radio Theatre! Some of these resources may be available in downloadable form at www.audible.com, itunes, www.familylife.com or www.family.org
