Advent Devotions Begin Right Here on Dec 1!

Hi everyone! I’ll be daily blogging out a simple scripture until Christmas that you can read with your family to prepare your hearts for Christmas. A few minutes nightly will go a long way!

I know how hard it can be to focus on Jesus’ birthday with all we have to do to be ready for Christmas, so I promise you this simple time of reading a scripture at night with your family will help you to keep Christ uppermost in your heart. I’ll also suggest a short Christmas Carol and you can just sing the chorus together.

Wives, help your husbands by printing out the daily scripture that I‘ll blog out, making it easy for them so that all they have to do is sit down with their Bible and the family. Let him use it however he wants. I like us to gather in the room with the Christmas tree. 

Single moms can do this. Wives who have husbands who are not willing to do it—you can do it with your children when he is not around.

Okay, for you moms (or some dads!) that want to take it a step further, especially if you have little ones, I’ll be using Ann Hibbard’s fabulous book Family Celebrations: Meeting Christ in Your Holidays and Special Occasions if you want to make a simple felt advent tree.

You will making a simple felt figure to go along with the reading, like a star or a red heart very simple stuff. You can do it on the fly, the night of the reading if you have the felt and glue ready, or just paper and colored pencils or crayons. 

You could let little ones draw the suggested figure and put it on your real tree. For those who want to make the felt tree, go ahead and get the felt now, and I’ll tell you what to cut out each day. 

For those who want to make the felt tree (that you will re-use for years to come like us!), get a big strip rectangle of red felt about 48 inches by 30 inches. Get enough green felt to make a big, felt green tree that you will glue to the felt. Get lots of colors of the little 8 x 11 sheets of felt: red, black, yellow, purple, brown, etc. to make your daily symbols that you can pin to the tree after you sing your carol.

Even if you don’t plan to do the tree, read the scripture together. It will make a huge difference in your Christmas being meaningful as it focuses on keeping Christ the center of your Christmas!

And oh—thanks for the grace up front if I miss a day or two in 25. I’ll try to at the very minimum to just give you the scripture. I’m shooting for 25, but you know how life gets! Give yourself a little grace, too:-)
